Untitled
Underneath the needles
In the mud where the morels breathe
I sink below the threshold
My body knows
And descends into the dark cavern
Immersed in the static of a fountain
Sapphires filter
I reach into a white mirror
On the other side the air is softer
Is darkness made of layer upon layer?
Do constellations peek through pinholes?
Conveyored deep into emptiness on a wide belt
Below zero vacuum funnels
Chutes and ladders
Tunnels of milk
Wise woman waits until I knock
Then lets me out in the snow
Thank you calloused maiden of the fields
Bedouin shrouded
Cane and visor
Bonnet and staff
Damning the cattle factories
Alone where the frozen ammonia sleeps
And freight comes for retirement
Corroded old track
She rounds the giant rolls of straw
And I follow as she bounds
Grasses hiss and whisper
“Rachel”
Guardian of the infinite horizon
Whips coyote with switches of nettle
While I
With bags beneath my eyes
Go hungry lest her trunk
Bridge our dimensions
Skin for bark
Spring ascends
Legs amphibian
She cocks her head at me
“Judging by your appearance, you don’t like yourself.”
Which she says with impunity
Because I’m her child
Still I anger
Because she’s my lover
“Rachel”
